Things to do in Cornwall – Summer Cob Workshops

Cornwall has a rich heritage that attracts many people to our county. Once famous for its mining and fishing industries, Cornwall’s traditions are all around us…..and you hardly need to scratch the surface to witness Cornwall’s history first hand.

Historically, a lot of Cornish buildings were constructed from cob…cottages, farmsteads and boundary walls…all made from cob. Cornwall’s clayey soils are second to none [for making cob]……there’s a lot of it….and it didn’t cost anything either! The soils are mixed with straw and water, placed onto the wall and left to dry….once dry it is incredibly hard…and perfect for building with.

The Cob Specialist has been established in Cornwall for almost 30 years and we have the privilege of restoring Cornwall’s cob walls. From our depot in mid-Cornwall, we manufacture cob using locally sourced soils and locally grown straw and this is then used for cob repairs and cob wall rebuilds.

We are now opening up our doors for the summer of 2026 for cob workshops. These cob workshops are 3 hour sessions of learning about cob and building with cob. You’ll get the opportunity to make cob and use it for building whatever you want. We have earth mortars too whereby you can let your imagination run wild and perhaps do some sculpting.

You’ll agree that there are many things to do in Cornwall…but nothing quite like this!
