Stone work

Stone in Cornwall

Geologically, Cornwall has an enviable diversity of sub-ground minerals; China-clay, tin, copper, semi-precious stones and even gold, to name but a few.

In addition, there are igneous and metamorphic rock formations and it’s from these formations and sediments that different rock-types have been, and continue to be, extracted and used for constructional intent. When asked about the most commonly used stone for construction in Cornwall, granite is undoubtedly the frontrunner. Granite, some 200+ million years in the making, is a metamorphic rock-type that has been identified as once molten and was formed when cooling from volcanic activity. There are several types of granite in Cornwall, however we freely admit to not being geologists here and therefore exact interpretation should be searched for elsewhere.

However, what we do know is……granite makes for an unquestionably effective building stone. It’s hard-wearing and decorative characteristics are not solely popular here in Cornwall but can be found worldwide. Sedimentary stone is also in abundance throughout Cornwall both in buildings and walling. Historically, local quarrying was a familiar sight around the townships and villages of the County and testimony to this profuse activity is the variance and splendour of building stone within the historic environment. Whilst we have no ornamental stone masons in-house, we do offer stone-walling, natural stone cladding/s and stone repairs with a wide-ranging expertise and knowledge base.
